Key takeaways
  • Retail sales to consumers use ETA e-receipts. Sales between registered businesses use e-invoices.
  • The ETA sets obligations taxpayer by taxpayer, so check your status and start date on its website.
  • The POS must send each document in real time, and returns need proper reversal documents.
  • AIFFICIENTO Starter costs EGP 299 per month, with a 30-day free trial and no credit card.

The Egyptian Tax Authority (ETA) runs the national e-invoicing system. Retailers mostly deal with the consumer side, which the ETA calls e-receipts. This guide explains the two document types, how the phased rollout works, what your POS must do and what to check before go-live. It is current as of October 2026. The ETA portal is the final source for any obligation.

E-invoice or e-receipt?

The ETA uses two document types:

  • E-invoices for transactions between registered businesses, and between businesses and government bodies. The buyer has a tax registration number.
  • E-receipts for sales to end consumers, where the buyer has no tax registration number. This is the usual retail case.

Use the right document type for each sale. A shop selling to a walk-in customer follows the e-receipt route, not the business invoice route. Using the wrong document type is a common early mistake.

How the rollout works

The ETA did not switch on the whole system at once. It ran a pilot for retail e-receipts from April 2022, starting with a small group of taxpayers. The requirement then expanded in phases. ETA decisions set which taxpayers join each sub-phase and on which date. Press and vendor reports describe a later sub-phase that covered B2C transactions from 15 September 2025, under ETA Decision 281 of 2025. Other sub-phases started under earlier resolutions.

The lesson for a shop owner is simple. Coverage is decided taxpayer by taxpayer, not by one turnover line. Check the ETA website to see whether your business is in scope and from which date. Do not rely on a neighbour's answer or an old article.

What the POS must do

ETA integration is real-time. Each e-receipt or e-invoice must reach the ETA's central platform as the sale happens. Your POS or ERP must:

  • Create each document in the format the ETA requires, with the seller's tax details.
  • Attach item codes that match the ETA goods and services code list.
  • Send the document to the ETA platform and store the response.
  • Handle returns and cancellations with the proper reversal document, not by editing the old receipt.
  • Support digital signing for e-invoices, which uses a certificate from an accredited provider. Check what your provider supplies, because a hardware token is commonly used.

Ask your vendor how the POS behaves when the ETA link is down. Confirm what the rules allow for your document type, and then test that behaviour.

Items, taxes and receipts

Egyptian shops often sell many small items and a few large ones. Clean data prevents rejected documents:

  • Give every product a clear name, a code and a unit.
  • Map each product to the right tax treatment. Taxable, exempt and zero-rated items need different settings.
  • Use Arabic item names where your customers read Arabic. The receipt can show a second-language name next to the English one.
  • Check the receipt layout against the ETA requirements before you print a batch.

Egyptian shoppers pay by cash, card and mobile wallet. Your receipt must show the total and the tax correctly whatever the payment method. A split payment should never change the tax shown on the receipt.

A go-live checklist

  1. Check your ETA obligation and start date on the ETA website.
  2. Ask your accountant which document types your sales need.
  3. Ask your POS vendor how the ETA connection works, and whether a test environment exists.
  4. Clean the product list and map every item to the right tax treatment.
  5. Send test documents for each sale type, including one return.
  6. Confirm the ETA response for each test, and keep the records.
  7. Train cashiers on what to do when the link fails.

Returns, cancellations and corrections

A receipt that has been sent to the ETA should not be edited. If a sale is wrong, issue the reversal document that the ETA rules provide, and record the reason. Your cashier process should make this clear:

  • Returns need the original document reference, so the reversal links to the right sale.
  • Voids need a reason and an approval, the same as any other control on the till.
  • Corrections need a manager's approval and a record in the audit trail.

Test every reversal during the trial, and check the ETA response for each one.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming a paper copy is enough. The record that counts is the document submitted to the ETA.
  • Mixing up the document types. A walk-in sale needs an e-receipt, not a business invoice.
  • Leaving product codes unmapped. One unmapped item can block a whole receipt.
  • Ignoring outages. A shop without an ETA link must know what to do, and staff must know whom to call.

Training your staff

Your cashiers are the first line of compliance. Keep training short and practical. Show each cashier how to issue a normal receipt, how to handle a return and what to do when the ETA link fails. Give them a one-page guide with the steps and the name of the person who can help. Review the process after the first week, when real sales show what the trial could not.

Where AIFFICIENTO fits

AIFFICIENTO is a retail POS for Egyptian shops. One PC acts as the server, and counters run on the shop network. Billing continues without internet, and sales data stays on your own PC.

The counter supports barcode billing, held bills, split payments (cash, card, wallet, bank and customer credit), returns with or without a receipt, voids with a reason and approval, and shift reports. You can add second-language item names to receipts, including Arabic.

ETA e-invoicing integration is configured per shop on request. Use the Request integration button in Settings, Store, and our team configures and tests it for your registration. AIFFICIENTO is not certified, approved or accredited by the Egyptian Tax Authority. We will not claim otherwise, and we will not promise a go-live date before we have tested your setup.

Starter is EGP 299 per month, with 1 counter and up to 3 users. Growth and Business prices are on pricing. The Egypt POS software page covers the local market, and tax and e-invoicing explains how the integration fits.

Start a 30-day free trial with full access to everything. No credit card is needed. Use it to run your test receipts and returns before you change your live till. Starter is EGP 299 per month after the trial.

FAQs

Is an e-receipt the same as an e-invoice?
No. An e-invoice covers a sale between businesses that both have tax registration numbers. An e-receipt covers a sale to an end consumer, which is most retail sales. Your accountant confirms which one your shop uses.
How do I know if my shop must issue e-receipts?
The ETA assigns obligations taxpayer by taxpayer and publishes them on its website. Check your status there, and confirm the start date with your accountant.
Does the POS need a USB token?
E-invoices use digital signing with a certificate from an accredited provider. Ask your provider what they supply. Rules for e-receipts can differ, so confirm with the ETA and your integrator.
Is AIFFICIENTO connected to the ETA?
ETA integration is set up on request for each shop, after our team tests it. AIFFICIENTO is not certified or accredited by the ETA.
