Sri Lanka's retail runs on a mix of supermarket chains and a dense network of small shops. In almost every town, the kade, a small grocery or provision store, is where households buy rice, dhal, tea, soap and biscuits, often every day. Pharmacies, hardware shops and clothing outlets make up much of the rest, and many owners run them with a handful of staff and one counter.
Credit is common. Regular customers may buy on a tab and settle at the end of the month, and owners keep a notebook or ledger for each name. Keeping those balances accurate is one of the hardest jobs in a small shop, and a clear customer account saves arguments at the counter.
Bigger towns have supermarkets and malls. Colombo's Pettah and Maradana wholesale streets supply many of the city's shops, and the markets of Kandy and Galle serve the towns around them. Supermarkets need promotions, batch and expiry control, and reports that show which lines sell at which hour.
Digital payments are growing quickly. LankaQR and other QR payments are now common at the counter, alongside cards and cash. Owners want the day's close to show each method separately.
Power cuts and internet outages still happen in some areas. A shop that cannot bill during an outage loses the sale and the customer. Offline-first selling, with the data kept on the shop's own PC, protects the day's takings and makes the owner less dependent on one connection.

Inland Revenue Department (IRD)
IRD VAT invoicing & reporting
Value added tax (VAT) in Sri Lanka is administered by the Department of Inland Revenue (IRD). VAT-registered businesses must charge VAT on taxable supplies, issue invoices with the required details, keep records and file VAT returns on the schedule the IRD sets. Rates, thresholds and invoice content change through budget and gazette notices, so check the current requirements with the IRD or your tax adviser.
AIFFICIENTO records each sale with your VAT registration number, applies the tax settings you configure for each product, and keeps invoices, returns and voids in one register. Sales and tax reports help you prepare the figures your accountant needs.
If you need specific invoice content or reporting integration, open Settings, then Store, and use the Request integration button. Our team configures and tests it for your registration. We have not confirmed a mandatory e-invoicing or fiscal device rule for general retail shops, so ask the IRD or your adviser what applies to you before you go live.
AIFFICIENTO is not certified or approved by the IRD. Filing VAT returns remains your responsibility.

Choosing a POS in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has cloud POS products, accounting software and hardware bundles, and each suits a different kind of shop. Start with your daily work. Run a test day with barcode billing, a credit sale, a LankaQR payment, a return and an end-of-day cash count. Switch off the internet and check whether the counter keeps billing. Ask each vendor, in writing, which VAT invoice details they support, whether they can configure any IRD requirement that applies to you, and whether that is included or extra. Compare the monthly price per branch with the counters and users you need now, and check whether the trial needs a card. Good software should make the working day easier before you pay anything.
