Bahrain's retail market is compact, and shoppers move easily between Manama, Muharraq and the suburbs. The neighbourhood baqala is the daily stop for groceries, dairy, bread and household needs, while supermarkets and hypermarkets handle larger weekly baskets. Bab Al Bahrain Souq and the Gold Souk in Manama, and the Muharraq Souq, keep steady trade in textiles, perfume, sweets, gold and gifts.

Most shops are small businesses. The owner often runs purchasing, pricing and the till, and staff come from several countries. Arabic and English item names appear on shelf labels and receipts, and electronic payments such as BenefitPay sit alongside cash and cards at the counter.

The Bahraini dinar uses three decimal places, so a product priced at 2.750 dinars must be rounded consistently on receipts, reports and VAT figures. Shops that sell both for cash and on credit need clear customer balances, and some customers, especially smaller shops buying stock, expect a trade price.

The usual pains are queues at peak times, stock that drifts from the shelf, credit customers who pay late, and the time it takes to gather VAT figures each month. A system that runs on the shop PC, keeps selling when the internet drops and syncs later keeps the till moving and the numbers ready at month end.

Tax & e-invoicing

National Bureau for Revenue (NBR)

NBR VAT and expected e-invoicing

Bahrain charges VAT at 10%, administered by the National Bureau for Revenue (NBR). VAT-registered businesses whose taxable supplies pass the registration threshold must show their VAT number on tax invoices. NBR e-invoicing is expected but was not fully in force at the time of writing, so check the NBR's current timeline and the businesses in scope before you change your invoices.

AIFFICIENTO stores your VAT number and sets VAT at 10% for each product. It records tax on sales, purchases and returns, and keeps invoice numbering in one place, so the figures for your VAT return are ready at month end.

Integration with NBR e-invoicing is available on request. Our team configures and tests it for your registration and confirms the requirements with you before go-live. We do not claim certification or approval from the NBR or any other authority on AIFFICIENTO's behalf. Confirm current requirements with the NBR or your tax adviser before you rely on any invoice format.

Choosing a POS in Bahrain

Bahrain has fewer local retail POS brands with published prices than the larger Gulf markets, so compare carefully. Zoho POS includes Bahrain in its Gulf rollout and is priced per location in USD, as published in October 2026. It offers Arabic and VAT settings. Restaurant-first platforms are built for table service and kitchen screens, so they fit cafes better than grocery counters.

Test before you commit. Use a copy of your product list, scan 200 items, price some products to three decimals, make 50 sales with split payments including BenefitPay, print a receipt with Arabic and English item names, check the VAT figures, and export the sales report. Ask each vendor for a written quote that covers support, data export and its plans for e-invoicing.
