Key takeaways
  • A cashier system in Saudi Arabia has to handle Arabic, mada and wallet payments, and the ZATCA rules for your wave.
  • Ask every vendor how they handle your ZATCA wave, what they support today, and what they will configure for you.
  • Compare total cost in SAR, including hardware, setup and support, not just the monthly plan.
  • Test with your own products, your own returns and a full day of cashier activity before you sign.

Saudi retail covers a wide range of shops: supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies, fashion and cosmetics stores, electronics shops, and the small neighbourhood grocery that opens early and closes late. A good cashier system helps every one of them bill quickly, track stock, and meet the country's e-invoicing rules. This guide sets out what to check when you choose a point of sale (POS) system for Saudi Arabia. Prices are in SAR as published in October 2026.

What a Saudi retailer needs from a POS

Your daily work decides the features that matter most. A supermarket needs fast barcode billing and expiry tracking. A boutique needs variants and easy returns. A pharmacy needs strict stock control and clear reports. A mobile shop needs serial numbers. Start with your own shop, then check each vendor against it.

Four points apply to almost every Saudi shop:

  • Arabic and English. Staff and customers read both. Item names and receipts should be available in both languages.
  • ZATCA readiness. Your system must be able to produce compliant e-invoices for your integration wave.
  • Payment types. Cash, card, mada and digital wallets all appear at the counter. Split payments are common.
  • Offline selling. Shops must keep trading when the network drops.

ZATCA readiness: the first question to ask

Saudi e-invoicing is rolled out in waves based on revenue. Each wave has its own deadline. Before you look at any feature list, ask every vendor three questions:

  • Which ZATCA wave does your current integration support?
  • What do you configure for my wave, and what do I need to provide?
  • Can I see a test invoice with the QR code and the signed XML before go-live?

The answers tell you whether the vendor understands the rules. Read our ZATCA Phase 2 guide for the wave dates as reported in October 2026.

Be careful with any vendor who claims a certification you cannot check. AIFFICIENTO does not claim ZATCA certification. Fatoora integration is available on request, and our team configures and tests it for your registration.

Payments: mada, wallets and split bills

Most Saudi customers pay by mada or another card, and many use a digital wallet. Your cashier system should:

  • Accept split payments, for example part cash and part card.
  • Record the payment type on each sale, so your daily close matches the bank deposits.
  • Let you rename or add wallet labels for the payment methods you accept.
  • Handle change calculation and quick cash buttons for fast counters.

Ask the vendor how the card terminal is connected, and whether the POS records the payment or only the sale. A common problem is a daily close where the card total on the POS differs from the terminal report by a few riyals. Ask the vendor to show you how that difference is found and corrected, before you need to.

Hardware for a Saudi counter

A typical counter needs:

  • A USB barcode scanner.
  • A thermal receipt printer on 58 mm or 80 mm paper, with a QR code.
  • A cash drawer.
  • A PC or tablet for the counter, plus a card terminal.
  • Optionally, an Android handheld for stock checks on the shop floor.

Get quotes from local suppliers in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and other cities, and compare them with the software cost. Ask the vendor which printers and scanners are tested with their system.

Costs in SAR

Compare total cost over the first year. AIFFICIENTO publishes Saudi prices. The Starter plan is SAR 39 per month for one counter and up to three users. Growth is SAR 95 per month for up to three counters, with unlimited users, promotions, loyalty and a larger AI allowance. Business is SAR 179 per branch per month, with unlimited counters, multi-branch support and tax-integration setup. Yearly billing gives two months free. Check the pricing page for the current plans.

Ask every vendor about:

  • Setup and onboarding fees.
  • Data migration from spreadsheets or old software.
  • Support hours and response time.
  • Per-user, per-counter or per-branch fees.
  • Any charge for the e-invoicing integration.

Staffing and shift control

A cashier system should make it hard for a shift to go wrong. Give each cashier a login and a PIN, record the opening float, and track cash in and out during the day. At close, the system should show expected cash against the cash counted. Ask the vendor how a manager approves a void or a discount, and whether that approval is logged. Those controls matter most in shops with several cashiers and changing shifts.

Questions to ask before you sign

  • Can you load my real product list and bill ten items in the demo?
  • How do you handle returns and credit notes for a card payment?
  • What do I see on the dashboard at the end of a shift?
  • How do cashiers log in, and can I limit what each role can see?
  • What happens to sales during a power or internet cut?
  • How do I export my data if I want to leave?
  • Can you show a sample daily report in Arabic and English?

Where AIFFICIENTO fits

AIFFICIENTO is a retail POS. It is built for counters, stock and customer accounts, not restaurant table service. The software runs on a Windows PC as the shop server, with terminals on the network. An Android app lets managers check sales and stock from the shop floor, and an iOS app is planned but not yet available.

Cashiers can use the Touch layout with product tiles, or a keyboard-first layout with F-keys. Items can carry Arabic names, and receipts can show them. Customers can have credit accounts with limits and statements. The built-in assistant, Geto, answers questions about your shop and prepares actions for you to confirm.

FAQs

What is the best cashier system for a small shop in Saudi Arabia?
The best fit depends on your sales volume, products and payment mix. A small shop should compare the Starter plan at SAR 39 per month with the full cost of hardware and support, and test it with real products first.
Does a POS in Saudi Arabia need ZATCA integration?
Yes, if your business falls in a Phase 2 wave. Ask the vendor how they support your wave. AIFFICIENTO offers Fatoora integration on request and does not claim ZATCA certification.
Can the POS accept mada and wallet payments?
Most systems record card and wallet payments as payment types. Check whether the card terminal is linked to the POS or entered by hand, and ask how the daily close matches the bank deposits.
Does AIFFICIENTO have an Arabic interface?
The interface is in English, and item names, customers and receipts can be entered in Arabic. Ask our team about the Arabic version of the site and any Arabic setup for your shop.
